Nicky Nook walk

Tim writes: Never having been a fan of linear walks, today I walked a circular route that includes the low summit of Nicky Nook, which is an easy walk on the edge of the Forest of Bowland. Due to its proximity to the A6 and Scorton, it’s easily accessible and parking at Ghyll Wood rarely presents a problem.

Whilst Nicky Nook is only 215m above sea level, the ascent is fairly steep, but it is short. From the top, you will get superb views of the Bowland Fells over to the east, towards Grizedale. If you look backwards along your route, you’ll see the Irish Sea beyond the Fylde and Lancaster, and on a really clear day you’ll even be able to see the Lake District Fells.

Today I deviated from the path slightly to grab a photo of The Tarn, and then headed up to the trig point. From here the route then descends towards Grizedale Reservoir, with views over towards Calder Fell. The path follows the lower western part of the water’s edge and continues along the outlet stream – Grizedale Brook.

Eventually the path reaches a fingerpost sign and a stile, where you take a right and follow the road back to the starting point at Ghyll Wood.

This is a really pleasant and straightforward walk that demands little in the way of energy and navigation.
